Strengthening and understanding the core values of your company is essential. And as a team leader, it’s up to you to guide your team along this journey.

The values of any organization are different and unique. It often depends on things like the industry or the background of the employees.

What’s important to remember is that all organizations are made up of their people. So, even the values of a company can be largely influenced by the values of its employees!

This brings me to my first core values exercise. It involves exploring the personal values of your team in order to become more in tune with the values of the company.

Start by handing out a few index cards to your team. Then, ask them to write down one of their own personal values on each notecard.

You can determine a set amount that they should write down or just go with the flow. You can also stick with a certain theme if that will help guide your team better.

Next, divide your employees into small groups. It would be best to have two to five people in each group, but this can depend on the size of your team.

Once the teams have gathered, have each person share their personal values with the rest of the group. The group can then make a shared values list for them all.

After that, each group can share its core values list as a group. Your entire team can discuss the results and more deeply understand what matters to them as a whole.

After taking time to discuss ideas and values, compare the core values list of each group to the core values of the company.

This exercise is a great way for employees to learn more about their coworkers while seeing how their own core values tie into that of the company.

#2. Identify What’s Important To The Organization

A big part of learning a company’s values is identifying what matters to the company.

It’s important for your team to think about what they believe matters to the company so that they can discover how their own individual values fit in.

Properly facilitating group activities and discussions can be hard. But with a professional corporate speaker, you can feel assured knowing that your team is getting the professional guidance they need.

Start this exercise by dividing your employees into groups. Then, have them think about what is important to the company they work for.

  • What are the key qualities and attributes of an employee who works here?
  • How does the company work to shape employees’ career paths?

If you want your team to understand the actual values of the company, they first need to have a firm grasp of the company’s image.

Company image is the accumulation of the reputation, culture, and values of a company. It’s seen and experienced by everyone from upper managers to simple consumers.

Your company’s values often play an integral role in curating the image. For example, a company with poor values will likely have a poor reputation and poor image. Conversely, a company with solid and upstanding values will have a positive culture and a strong image.

This exercise is merely a group discussion that will dive into the very image of your company.

Ask these simple questions to get the ball rolling:

  • What do people first think of when they hear about our company? This question considers the outward reputation of the company.
  • What makes our company unique? Positive qualities that set your company apart from the competition are often a great way to learn about its image and values.
  • What problems is our company working to solve? No organization is perfect! However, the mark of any great company is that it recognizes any flaws and properly addresses them.
  • What does good work look like in our company? What does a star employee look like? What makes them the gold standard?

Of course, you can ask any sort of questions you’d like. However, the goal is to get your team to start thinking about the image of the company and how it ties into the core values.

You might think at first that there should only be one kind of leader. A good leader. And I wholeheartedly agree. Every leader should make an effort to be positive, genuine, and supportive of their team.

But not everyone operates in the same way. There are different leadership styles, just like there are different emcee styles, and there can be some big differences between them.

The first type of leader I’ll talk about is known as the autocratic leader. This leadership style focuses on achieving a clear end goal, sometimes without regard for anyone else.

An autocratic leader often makes decisions and gives orders without seeking input or feedback from followers. In an autocratic leadership style, the leader has complete control over the decision-making process and the team’s direction. But this can make for a pretty unfair leadership style.

Autocratic leaders don’t like to be questioned, and they want their team members to follow their lead without question.

What Makes A Good LEADER?

Not all leaders are necessarily good. Though we all like it when we can get paired up with a good leader, that doesn’t always happen.

Here are six qualities that any good LEADER should have. Make sure you’re working on fine-tuning these characteristics on your own!

L – Listening Skills

Any good leader needs to be able to listen to their followers. The input and feedback of your employees can be exceptionally valuable, and it shouldn’t go to waste!

E – Empathy

Good leaders seek to understand the problems and perspectives of those on their team.

A – Accountability

We all know a leader that likes to pin the blame on anyone else but themselves. That’s not the sign of a good leader. Good leaders know how to hold themselves accountable.

D – Decision-Maker

Decisiveness is a great quality everyone should have. Good leaders know how to make informed and timely decisions.

E – Emotionally Intelligent

There’s often a certain amount of emotion floating around the office. Leaders should know how to handle their own emotions and the emotions of others.

R – Resilience

Leaders need to be able to lead. It does no good if your leader has no passion and doesn’t care about the company’s mission. Good leaders are resilient and know how to adapt to changes and setbacks.

Laissez-faire leaders are also often called delegate leaders. This is a hands-off approach to leadership that prioritizes the freedom and capabilities of the team members. It’s very much the opposite of autocratic leadership.

In French, the term laissez-faire loosely translates to the English phrase let it be. The laissez-faire leader provides minimal supervision and support and allows their employees to determine their own goals and objectives.

Servant leaders make their primary goal to serve the team. They are perhaps the most selfless leader and altogether drop any personal agenda to help their team and the company succeeds.

Transformational leadership, or visionary leadership, is centered around big-picture goals. These types of leaders set objectives focused on the organizational mission.

Any skills that our employees currently possess are simply the result of them learning said skills. But an employee’s attitude can be a fickle thing.

If someone has a poor attitude, they won’t be much fun in the office. They will slow down work while simultaneously dragging down employee morale. Negative attitudes can ruin an office or even an entire organization.

On the other hand, positive attitudes are the lifeblood of any supportive and successful workplace. Moreover, a productive attitude allows employees to quickly and enthusiastically learn new skills, making a great attitude just about the best skill there is!

So, how exactly can a positive attitude in the workplace affect an organization as a whole? There are eight main qualities that a positive mindset can affect in the workplace. Let’s take a look at each one, following the acronym POSITIVE.

Many qualities are essential for a well-rounded and successful workplace. One of the most critical is productivity.

Productivity is vital for an organization. It keeps things moving and the money coming in. Any organization is still a business, and businesses need productivity to operate.

Many may think productivity only comes from employees with the hard skills necessary to maintain output. But that’s not necessarily true. A positive outlook is needed for employees to maintain motivation and engagement.

Employees who stay positive are more motivated and focused on their work. In addition, they are less likely to be distracted by negative thoughts or feelings, which can hinder productivity.

A constructive attitude can help employees prioritize their tasks correctly and set achievable goals, leading to greater efficiency. Attitude is about more than wearing a smile to work. It’s about giving your best every day!

For example, I spent plenty of time learning the skills needed to become a corporate emcee. But my great attitude is by far my best asset. That’s what any great speaker needs!

When we think of positive coworkers, we think of someone who doesn’t let things get them down. This person often doesn’t come into work bringing bad vibes and dragging everyone else down with them.

For the most part, it’s best to steer clear of people like this. They often focus on the negativities in life and then impose their bad attitude on those around them.

This is another critical aspect of a positive work environment. Positive employees show up to work ready to go and excited for the day. And that’s the foundation of a great workplace.

A constructive attitude can create a sense of optimism in the workplace, which can help improve job satisfaction and reduce stress levels. Optimistic employees approach challenges head-on with a can-do attitude and can influence others just like a funny speaker can.

People with a positive attitude look for solutions rather than dwelling on problems. This helps lead to a more supportive and proactive work environment.

A big reason attitude is so vital is that it can’t be taught. Of course, you can try, but it’s near impossible to enlighten someone about a new way of thinking if they’re not already used to it.

Positive people tend to think about problems like this:

  • If this doesn’t work, I can try a new method.
  • Is this the best that I can do?
  • This project may take time and effort, but I’m willing to put in the work.
  • Even though this isn’t in my job description, it would help the team if I did it.

Those with a positive mindset focus on what they can do and do their best at all times. They upkeep a constructive way of thinking and don’t dwell on the negative side.

On the other hand, those with a negative attitude may focus on things like this:

  • I can’t do this. I should give up.
  • This isn’t my best work, but it’s good enough.
  • This is too hard.
  • I don’t want to help out anywhere else.

This difference in mindsets is often referred to as the growth versus fixed mindset. Someone with a growth mindset views skills and intelligence as learnable and improvable

On the other hand, someone with a fixed mindset believes that no matter what, they can’t change or get better, assuming they are fine where they are.

That brings us to our next workplace quality affected by a POSITIVE attitude. Support.

A positive attitude can foster a supportive work environment where colleagues are willing to help and support each other. Instead of focusing on their problems and living in the fantasy that nothing can be changed for the better, someone with a constructive attitude focuses on supporting those around them.

Employees with a constructive attitude are more likely to offer assistance when needed and to give constructive feedback rather than criticism. This can improve teamwork, collaboration, and communication, leading to better outcomes and stronger relationships.
